It’s raining crossovers and it seems every major automaker wants to join the bandwagon in one of the hottest growing segments in the Indian market. The latest in line is expected to be Korean automaker Hyundai who is developing a new crossover model based on the existing Elite i20.
According to a report by Motor Bash, the i20-based crossover would feature increased ground clearance and improved braking power compared to the standard hatchback. The former is currently undergoing testing and is set to compete with the Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and the Volkswagen Cross Polo.
Going by the previous spy shots, the crossover has a very similar appearance to the Elite i20 but gets the obvious plastic body cladding, bigger wheels and higher ground clearance. Inside, the vehicle is expected to share the same interior, feature list and variant nomenclature as the i20.
On the mechanical front, it is expected to make use of the 1.2-litre petrol, 1.4-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel. The upgrades here would come in the form of increased ground clearance and improved braking system featuring bigger front disc calipers.
The i20-based crossover is expected to be priced higher than the Elite i20 by at least Rs 50,000 to Rs 70,000. The vehicle will be launched sometime next year.
