Hyundai has started exporting the Elite i20 hatchback to South Africa (SA) from India. The new model is completely manufactured in our country and was recently launched in SA with the option of an automatic variant as well.
This model of the i20 is the latest generation hatchback from Hyundai, also the company's most premium hatchback. It was designed at Hyundai Motor's Design Centre Europe in Russelsheim, Germany with an investment of Rs 1,050 crore. The new-generation model features the brand's 'Fluidic Sculpture 2.0' design philosophy that lends it a completely new look. The car comes packed with features and with a good overall package giving its competition a run for their money.
In India, the Elite i20 is available in both petrol and diesel engine options, but the SA market will only get the petrol. However, there are two engine options, one is the 83bhp four-cylinder 1.2-litre VTVT Kappa unit and another the 99bhp 1.4-litre mill. Both the engines come mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, whereas the latter comes paired to a four-speed manual gearbox.
Marketed as 'The Elite i20', Hyundai launched the hatchback in India on August 11 last year and ever since has created quite a sensation in the Indian market. This is the second generation model of the i20 that goes up against other cars in the highly competitive B-segment of cars in our country. The manufacturer expects to increase their sales further with the help of this car. Let us hope the new i20 also enjoys a good demand in South Africa as well.
