Hyundai India has set a rather challenging target for itself that involves crossing the half-a-million sales mark in the Indian market by 2016. In a bid to increase its market share, Hyundai India is expected to introduce the long awaited i20-based crossover by April this year. Prototype models of this upcoming vehicle have already been spied quite a few times, suggesting that the launch could be imminent.
The Korean automaker has reportedly revealed that it is looking at roughly 14 per cent growth in sales this year to 4.65 lakh units.
As is the case with most hatchback-based crossovers, the i20 crossover will have a very similar appearance to the standard model but with a healthy dose of plastic body cladding. The car is also expected to sport bigger wheels and a higher ground clearance.
On the mechanical front, the crossover is expected to make use of the 1.2-litre petrol, 1.4-litre petrol and the 1.4-litre diesel. The upgrades here would come in the form of increased ground clearance and improved braking system featuring bigger front disc calipers.
When launched later this year, the i20 crossover will go up against the Toyota Etios Cross, Fiat Avventura and the Volkswagen Cross Polo. Besides this, Hyundai also has the new Verna and the ix25-based compact SUV on the radar to strengthen its market share here in the Indian market.
