- Weaker showroom footfall in May 2024
- Conducive conditions expected in coming months
Honda India has just sent us their sales figures for May 2024 which stood at 11,343 units. By comparison, the brand sold 5,247 cars in May 2023, which may seem like it is going strong but the reality is quite different. Out of the 11,343 cars sold in May this year, Honda India exported more than 6,500 cars, including the Elevate which is made in India and sold in Japan as the WR-V.
Honda India has cited weaker showroom footfall in May 2024 because of the ongoing heat wave across the country, as the reason for the challenging market conditions. The brand is expecting things to get more conducive in the coming months although that may seem like an uphill task. Currently, Honda India is selling three models – the Amaze compact sedan, the evergreen City, and the Elevate crossover. In terms of sales of all three models, if we look at the monthly figures of the last six months, they are decent but nowhere as strong as the segment-leading models.
In a market where cars like the Maruti Suzuki Dzire and the Hyundai Creta are selling over 15,000 units a month each, Honda India would need to go on an offensive with the Amaze and, more importantly, the Elevate to increase its market share. As for the City, it is positioned in a segment that has lost its sheen ever since small to medium-size crossover models have gained popularity. It competes against the likes of the Hyundai Verna, Skoda Slavia, and the Volkswagen Virtus. Now, if we talk numbers, sales of these models are hovering around 1,200 units a month for each vehicle.
