Honda is believed to be contemplating the Acura luxury brand for the Indian market. A report from Autocar says that Hironori Kanayama, president of Honda India, has hinted that when the luxury segment does pick up properly in India, they will introduce the Acura line-up here.
The Acura brand name has been in existence for over 26 years and was first launched in USA. The range is also now being sold in China, Mexico and Hong Kong. The vehicles became known to the Indian audiences as the cars driven by Agent Phil and Iron Man a.k.a Tony Stark in the Avengers series of movies.
The Acura branded vehicles will be positioned above the Accord sedan (currently Honda’s flagship car) and maybe locally assembled instead of the CBU route in a bid to keep the cost of the vehicles in check. Given that its volumes are likely to be low, Honda may justify the CKD operations by exporting cars from India.
The India range is likely to include the RLX sedan, MDX SUV and given the increasing popularity of crossovers, maybe a four-door version of the ZDX crossover. All vehicles are likely to be priced in the range of Rs 30 lakh to Rs 50 lakh.
