Following the Global NCAP test in which Indian small cars didn’t perform well, all car manufacturers have decided to follow in Volkswagen’s footsteps and fit airbags in all their cars. Unlike VW, however, they really mean all their cars – you need to visit your nearest authorised service centre and they will give you two airbags for free.
“We decided to do something concrete to widen our customer base,” said an unnamed source. “India is first in the world in deaths related to road accidents, and as you know, ‘Dead men buy no cars!’ So we have taken this proactive step and are handing out airbags to all our esteemed customers.” In a surprising move, every single manufacturer has come forward to join the movement and as with everything else that is handed out for free in this country, the airbags seem to be in short supply. You can then collect a coupon and will get a call within the next six months to go to the service centre and collect your airbags.
The airbag installation is very easy and comes with a step-by-step instructional booklet in the package. You will need a basic toolkit to install them wherever you want in the car. However, the manufacturers have recognised that most car owners don’t know how to change a wheel when they have a puncture, so they might be a little challenged when it comes to airbag installation. They have thus decided to install for free in the location specified by the customer, two airbags provided the customer has a valid comprehensive or zero-depreciation insurance policy and no claims over the last two years.
When asked about whether the customers will be given education about seat belts, our unnamed source replied, “Education about safety is up to the government, not us. We’re already doing all we can even before the free airbag distribution – we have either variants that cost Rs 40,000 more with ABS, or optional ABS for Rs 20,000 more on select models. On a car that costs Rs 5 lakh that’s not such a big deal, is it?”
The free airbag distribution drive will continue till stocks last. Your car needs to be less than 5 years of age and with valid documentation to avail this offer. Visit your nearest authorised service centre for details.
