Great Wall Motors, one of China’s largest producer of SUVs, is currently in talks with officials from the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) to enter the Indian car market. This was confirmed by Suagato Sen deputy director general of SIAM.
Sugato said the Chinese car maker was currently looking for space to build a facility and had shortlisted locations in Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Gujarat. He added that they planned to start operations in the sub-continent by April 2015.
Great Wall was established in 1976 and is a major player in the Chinese truck and pickup market. It also produces a wide range of passenger vehicles right from hatchbacks to SUVs and is likely to bring the latter here due to growing demand. It exports vehicles in CKD form to over eight countries and has a plant in Bulgaria.
Great Wall’s move to enter India follows Beiqi Foton Motor Company (BFMC) which has already signed a MoU with the government of Maharashtra to set up a manufacturing plant worth Rs 1,670 crore to build commercial vehicles
