Ever wondered if that speed limit signboard on the road was taken seriously by motorists? There is no research to prove how many motorists abide by the indicated speed limit. It is an offence to break rules and we are against it too, at times it feels ridiculous to see a signboard showing 80kmph for speed limits on a six-lane high speed freeway. The ministry of transport has realised that it has been more than 20 years since they last defined speed limits.
They have envisaged setting a new speed limit for cars at 100kmph. Motorcycles can legally attain speeeds of 80kmph and commercial transport vehicles can also ply at 80kmph. A provision is being made for the quadricycle category and these vehicles can attain a maximum speed of 70 kmph.
In 2007, a law was proposed to increase the speed limit of cars to 100kmph and motorcycles to 65kmph. It has finally been looked into and soon we might see revised speed limits on signboards. Currently the speed limit in our country varies statewise and it might be different from state to state even now depending on the infrastructure development.
