In efforts to control pollution levels in Delhi, the government of India had recently banned diesel vehicles older than 10 years and has also banned the registration of diesel displacing over 2,000cc. In order to strengthen its cause, reports indicate that the government has now allowed owners to covert the old BS-II and BS-III compliant vehicle into electric hybrids.
Initially, the government of India will certify manufacturers like Bosch and Cummins to develop and provide hybrid electric kits. Though the cost for conversion is not known for now, we believe it should cost well under Rs 1 lakh, which might again be lower depending on the demand for the same. The reports also indicate that the road transport and highways ministry will approach the heavy industries ministry to offer incentives to such people under the National Electric Mobility Mission.
Post availability of hybrid electric kits, the owners of old cars who until now intended to dispose off their older vehicles, can now opt for a new option. More details on how these hybrid electric kits would function and how cost effective it would be will be known in the coming days.
