Changing to winter tyres to cope with snow isn't something we're familiar with, but it is a necessary practice in certain areas around the globe. Scientists from the University of Leipzig have now developed a tyre that will adapt on its own to the driving conditions.
The tyre is equipped with electronic sensors that recognises whether it is dry, raining or snowing, and whether the road is paved or not - and it automatically widens the tyre, or increases the sidewall height. This is done on the move, so one can have the benefits of low fuel consumption and a short stopping distance all at a single go. The project is far from finished, however, but the team has patented the idea - just in case.
