GM India has announced that it will expand the manufacturing capacity at its Halol plant to 1.10 lakh units from the present 85,000 units annually. The company has also confirmed that it has phased out the Optra and the Aveo and will launch the Sail notchback next month. GM launched the hatchback version, the Sail U-VA, earlier this month.
GM has said that it is expanding capacity to facilitate the roll-out of the Enjoy MPV from the plant in the next few months. Commenting on the expansion, P Balendran, vice-president, corporate communication, said “The Halol capacity was short...so it is being expanded. With the inauguration of a press shop at Halol, it is now an integrated manufacturing plant."
The American Automaker has been following an aggressive strategy over the last one year and has either facelifted some of its models or launched new ones. It is likely that GM has hastened the launch of the Sail following the success of the hatchback.
