In a move aimed at increasing its share in the domestic auto market, General Motors India plans to introduce 7-8 new models in the sub-continent over the next five years. The American auto major also plans to double the production capacity of its Talegaon plant to be prepared for the increase in demand.
General Motors has already introduced the updated versions of the Tavera (Neo 3), the Captiva and the Cruze this year. The Chevrolet Sail U-VA hatchback will be launched by end of October; it will be followed by launch of the Spark facelift soon. GM will also launch the Sail sedan, all-new seven-seater MPV ‘Enjoy’ and the Beat facelift before end of March 2013.
Speaking on the development, Rakesh Mohan Sabbarwal, vice president General Motors, said “Lots of new models are coming up for the Indian market. We are discussing about 7- 8 models over the next 5-6 years." However, he did not specify any details about the vehicles.
Rakesh also said that GM India had received requests from some of the American auto major’s operations in other countries to supply powertrains manufactured locally. The issue is currently under discussion with our parent company, he added.
