According to a source, all BMW X models (SUVs) will get a long wheelbase version in the future. While it is easy to assume that the larger X models like the X5 and the probable X7 may get long wheelbase versions, if this rumour were to be true, even the smaller X1 and X3 will get LWB versions.
It seems like this idea has stemmed from BMW offering the elongated chassis versions in the Chinese markets. However, in a turn of events the company may have decided to offer it everywhere. The source mentions that the first in line to get this treatment will be the small X1 crossover.
We hope this is how BMW has planned it as the source mentions that the X1 LWB will debut in 2015, the X3 in 2017 and the X5 in 2020. The X1 will go front-wheel-drive in 2015 and it might even get seven-seats. The possibility of an X7 seems bleak considering the X5 might grow bigger, however, there is a chance that the X7 might be a reality according to us.
In India, there is still ambiguity over the strategy of offering a seven seater luxury SUV being a success. Although consumer preferences differ segment wise, the recently launched F15 X5 which had seven-seats could serve as a study tool if more seats in the luxury segment is an advantage to have. However, more space is always welcome and it is more than likely that these LWB variants will be launched in India.
