-Full electric car for the S-Class range
-Autonomous driving ability
-Proposed 700km range
There is absolutely little doubt that the Mercedes-Benz S-Class is the gold standard for luxury cars. It has been around long enough to make a name for itself and to keep the legacy going Mercedes-Benz will induct the sedan into their future line up. This fully electric S-Class of the future has been previewed in this car, the Vision EQS.
Now as we already all know, EQ is Mercedes’ electric sub-brand and this EQS will sit at the top of the food chain. There is a sense of GT car in the exterior design as it is low, long and with massive wheels that give it a hunkered down appearance. The roofline sits like a low dome on the body while the face is dominated by what appears to be a blue coloured 3D grille with the illuminated three-pointed star. There is a noticeable upward kink for the tail end while tail lamp sits like one giant bar at the rear.
The cabin is an elegant yet minimal design with four well defined space for each of the occupants. Between the driver and front passenger is a massive screen controlling all the functions while the latter also gets a second screen on their door side. There is a speedboat like appearance to the dashboard while the steering is a square unit that will most likely fold away when the car goes into autonomous mode.
The Vision EQS gets electric motors on the front and rear axles and the battery has been integrated into the vehicle floor. The basis for dynamic high-level performance and safety comes courtesy of the electric all-wheel drive with axle-variable torque distribution and a battery installed deep in the vehicle floor between the axles. Thanks to more than 350 kW of output and immediately available torque of around 760 newton metres, the Vision EQS accelerates from 0-100 kmph in under 4.5 seconds. Assuming a charging performance of 350 kW, the show car recharges the battery to 80 per cent in considerably less than 20 minutes.
The production spec EQS is a good five to seven years away and this preview tells us that it will be worth the wait for this generation of Mercedes-Benz S-Class.
