If you thought the massive kidney grille on the new 7 Series and the X7 weren’t massive enough, BMW hasn’t disappointed. Here is the Concept 4, showcased at the ongoing Frankfurt Motor Show, and it is supposed to preview the 4 Series coupe. Instead, it grabs attention with those ghastly pair of kidney grilles.
When the Concept 4 transforms into the production model, it should ideally carry forward the design of the G30 3 Series with just two fewer doors and a slightly more sloping roofline. But the Bavarian carmaker says “Concept 4 presents a confident and classy take on this iconic feature (the kidney grille). At the same time, it offers a look ahead to the expressive face of the 4 Series range”. Which means, that BMW might retain this ostentatious grille design in the production guise as well, claiming it to be a nod to the classic BMW 328 and the BMW 3.0 CSI.
Similar to the one seen on the M340i, the grille doesn’t get vertical louvres, instead, it comes fitted with studded pins. It is flanked by large air intakes on either side, which seems fitting for any X Series vehicle. Meanwhile, the sleek LED headlights are akin to the ones seen on the 8 Series Concept, which still look handsome alongside the in-your-face fascia.
The rear, however, is a lot easier on the eye and has all the design details we could look forward in the 4 Series line-up. The 8 Series-like taillights, sculpted rear bumpers with integrated exhaust tips and sloping roofline merging into the duct-tail boot. The low-slung silhouette and bulging wheel arches are complemented by large, deep-dish 21-inch alloy wheels. And lastly, the ‘forbidden red’ paint scheme makes the Concept 4 much more appealing.
There’s no interior reveal of the Concept 4 at this moment. The Concept 4 isn’t just a design study for the new 4 Series since it seems like most of the things will be carried in the production model when it arrives next year. Under the hood, there will be the same set of engine options offered with the 3 Series. There will also be a Gran Coupe and Convertible model in the 4 Series line-up followed by M versions of all three body styles.
