- Declared the world’s best-selling sports coupe for the fourth time in a row.
On April 17, 1964, the first-ever Ford Mustang was showcased at the New York World's Fair; and the rest they say is history. The Mustang is easily the most iconic muscle car till date and today it turns 55 years old. The Mustang also became the world’s best-selling sports coupe of 2018 – bagging the title for the fourth time in a row.
Selling, 113,066 cars in 2018 (according to data from IHS Markit), the Mustang’s market share has grown to 15.4 per cent globally. In the United States alone, the Mustang found 75,842 takers last year. Mustang is available across 146 markets and more than 5,00,000 sixth-generation Mustangs have been sold worldwide since 2015, claims the American carmaker. The reborn Mustang Bullit has gained further popularity and exceeded the global sales forecasts by 25 per cent. Today’s date is celebrated as National Mustang Day in the United States and also across the globe.
Jim Farley, Ford president, global markets, speaking on the occasion, said, “We broke the mould when Ford launched the Mustang 55 years ago. Nothing says freedom, the wind in your hair and the joy of driving like Mustang; it’s an icon. The roar of its V8 on a spring day, there’s nothing better. No wonder it’s the most popular sports coupe in the world”.
The Mustang is in its sixth generation now and is the only muscle car in the world available with a RHD layout. It has already made its presence felt in many motorsport events across the world and also has many potent variants such as the Shelby GT500, Mach 1, Super Snake, Boss, SVO, to name a few. Going forward, Ford plans to have a hybrid variant of the Mustang while also developing a new crossover based on this iconic muscle car.
