Last week, Ford unveiled the 2015 Mustang sportscar and had said that this new car will be joining their global vehicle programme (a.k.a One Ford) and for the first time will also be offered in RHD configuration sometime next year. While that alone is quite a surprise from the American automaker, word has now emerged that Ford is considering alternate powertrain options for the sportscar in markets outside America. This line-up may include electric motors, hybrids and wait for it… a diesel electric hybrid!
Ford is believed to be considering offering the Mustang outside America with any of these alternate powertrain options simply in a bid to increase the efficiency of the car in markets where fuel is expensive.
While it may seems blasphemous to auto enthusiasts that Ford is actually considering such a direction, we should remember that many traditional European manufacturers have switched to FWD simply in a bid to make their cars cheaper or more efficient. Let us hope that if and when Ford does consider the Mustang for India, we should get more options than the proposed diesel hybrid powertrain.
