A Ford EcoSport test vehicle has been spotted by the petrol heads from Team-BHP at a dealership in Mumbai (bearing MH plates). This is the second location after Delhi and Chennai where the EcoSport has been spotted recently. The compact SUV was unveiled here at 2012 Auto Expo and is likely to be launched for the Indian market in March.
Based on the same platform as the new Fiesta, the EcoSport is designed as an urban crawler and has a ground clearance of 200mm and water wading ability of upto 550mm. The India spec version will be powered by one petrol and one diesel engine. The former will be the 1.0-litre Ecoboost engine that produces 123bhp and roughly the same amount of torque.
Diesel power will come via the 1.5-litre TDCi DuraTorq mill that produces 90bhp and around 240Nm of torque. Power will be transmitted to the wheels via a five-speed manual or an six-speed automatic gear box which will be launched later on.
The EcoSport (depending on the variant) will get cooling glove-box, SYNC technology and various storage spaces across the vehicle. Safety features will include ABS, ESP and traction control. Most of the cabin has been styled in the American automakers new design philosophy and features materials of high quality.
The Ford EcoSport will compete with the likes of the Renault Duster and the Premire Rio, which is not in the same class but is still an SUV below four-meters. Expect a price in the range of Rs seven to eleven lakh.
