The Five-door Mini is on a global tour as just a short while after its Malaysian launch, the latest iteration of the iconic British hatchback has now been launched in the South African market for 305,000 Rand (Rs 16.73 lakh). It will be made available in South Africa in four variants and with two engine and gearbox options.
Except for the additional doors in the rear, the five-door Mini looks identical to the three-door model. The former, as a result, features trademark Mini styling cues such as the hexagonal front grille and circular chrome-ringed headlamps. Being a Mini, buyers will be offered a high level of customisation options ranging from alloy wheel designs, paint schemes and colour options for the roof and the door mirrors. The interior is an updated version of the older vehicle and has carried over many of the elements but now includes a heavily expanded feature list.
The South African market gets two engine options, the new 1.5-litre turbo petrol three-pot motor that produces 134bhp and 220Nm of torque or the 2.0-litre turbo petrol four pot motor that produces 189bhp and 280Nm of torque. The former is offered with the standard Cooper while the latter powers the Cooper S. Both engines can be had with a six-speed MT or a six-speed AT.
It almost seems certain that we in India will get the three-door Mini in standard form while the five-door Mini will be offered in the Cooper and Cooper S model options. Both cars will be simultaneously launched in the sub-continent on November 19.
