Fiat India has launched the new Punto Evo in Mumbai with prices starting at Rs 4.71 lakh for the entry-level 1.2-litre Active variant. The top-spec 1.3 Sport, on the other hand, costs Rs 7.42 lakh. In all, the vehicle is available in four diesel and three petrol variants.
The Punto Evo is the latest iteration of Fiat’s premium hatchback which has been on sale in the Indian market since 2009. Featuring significant external changes as well as all-new interiors, the Punto Evo is set to take on the fight against existing premium hatchbacks namely the Volkswagen Polo facelift and the upcoming Hyundai Elite i20.
The Punto Evo takes a lot of its design cues from the bigger Avventura crossover concept, which was unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. The front grille has been updated, and so have the elongated wrap-around headlamps and chrome fog lamp housings, giving the car a more mature look. The rear-end remains mostly unchanged, though the bumper has been reworked to accommodate the fog lamps and reverse lights. The tail lamps now get clear lens indicators. Inside, the dashboard has been lifted straight from the facelifted Linea, which is a good thing because the whole cabin looks and feels a whole lot more premium than before.
Speaking of engines, the petrol-powered Punto Evo comes with two engine options – a 1.2-litre (Active and Dynamic) and a 1.4-litre petrol unit (Emotion only). While the 1.2-litre unit produces 67bhp and 96Nm of torque, the bigger 1.4-litre unit produces 89bhp and 115Nm of torque. The diesel Punto Evo is powered by the popular 1.3-litre MultiJet engine which produces 75bhp of power and 197Nm of torque in the Active, Dynamic and Emotion variants. Lastly, the Sport variant gets a more powerful 90bhp version of the same MultiJet diesel unit.
The new Punto Evo competes with the recently introduced Volkswagen Polo facelift and the upcoming Hyundai Elite i20.
