Fiat is reportedly working on a new compact crossover for the Indian market to take on the likes of the Ford EcoSport. The new model is rumoured to be built on a new modular platform (codenamed X3U).
The new crossover from Fiat will be a sub-four metre crossover to claim the excise duty benefits and seems to be aimed squarely at the Ford EcoSport. It is rumoured that the X3U will be ready for launch by early 2016.
It will sport aggressive styling, and the new 1.5 Fiat diesel engine will make its debut in the compact SUV according to the source. The new engine might have an output of about 100bhp as the 1.6-litre has an output 118bhp.
Essentially, this new diesel mill is a scaled down version of the 1.6 JTD motor used globally by Fiat and its group companies. The reduction in engine capacity will save the company Rs 15,000 per car made and that will directly affect the profits.
The crossover segment in India is growing rapidly and now Fiat also wants a share of the pie. It seems like finally Fiat India is enthusiastic about our market, it is also rumoured that the company has planned a wide range of products to spice up its line-up. Currently, the company sells the Punto Evo and the Linea in our market.
