We eagerly awaited the Jeep branded vehicles in late 2013 but our adverse market conditions prevented us from seeing these iconic American SUVs from plying on our roads and finally, parent company Fiat stopped the rumour mills by confirming that they would launch the cars when the conditions got better. Now with some improvement in market conditions just over the horizon, Mike Manley, President and CEO of Jeep, has said that they will launch the brand in 2015 for the Indian market as part of their global expansion plan.
As predicted and seen, the first two vehicles that will be launched in India will be the Cherokee and the Wrangler. They are expected to be niche vehicles and will be brought to the Indian market through the CBU route. However, it plans to localise assembly of the vehicles sometime in the future to keep the prices competitive.
We also expect that once they have a firm footing in the Indian market, they will also bring the much smaller Jeep Renegade to the Indian market and drop it in the sub Rs 20 lakh segment where it will rival cars like the Honda CR-V and the Mini Countryman D. .
