Ferrari is set to unveil its twin-turbocharged engine and the California will be the first sports car to be powered by this new engine. The new mill will be the first from the Italian automaker in more than 20 decades now. It is expected to be unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in March next year.
Ferrari did not make any turbocharged engines since 1992 when it stopped manufacturing the F40. However, the carmaker assisted Maserati in the development of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 engine for the Quattroporte and the 3.0-litre V6 engine powering the Ghibli. This is when it emerged that the carmaker will develop a turbo engine in-house and power one of its cars with the same.
The next-generation variant of the sports car will be powered by the twin-turbo engine seen on the Quattroporte. This engine will be reworked to better the power output which is currently 523bhp of power and 650Nm of torque. The outgoing California is powered by the 4.3-litre naturally aspirated V8 engine producing 483bhp and 500Nm of torque.
The Ferrari California is a hard top convertible grand touring sports car. The new variant of this vehicle is expected to borrow traits from its predecessor. Ferrari is expected to better the shortcomings of the current model, especially by bringing in aluminium sheet metal in the new car’s body and a revised cabin with an advanced infotainment system. Whether Ferrari enthusiasts will be amazed or not, we will be able to tell only when more details of the revised Ferrari California comes out next year.
