A few weeks ago, we covered Ferrari’s intent to introduce a special series 488 after it was listed with the California Air Resources Board. Now the prancing horse is back in the news after someone took pictures during a dealer meet which was previewing the 488 GTO, and then went on to share it on Ferrariphotopage (an enthusiast’s website).
Judging by the slideshow, the upcoming 488 GTO will have the most powerful Ferrari V8 engine ever. Originally seen in the 488 Challenge, this unit has been revised to be 10 percent lighter than the drivetrain in the 488 GTB. Other weight saving measures include the extensive use of carbon-fibre in the bumpers, hood, rear spoiler, dashboard and centre-tunnel. Plus, the floor panels will be made of aluminium and the alloy wheels are now 40 percent lighter than the GTB’s.
Sadly, the exact power output was not disclosed at the meeting, but reports state that the newcomer could get nothing less than 700 horses. Tag this power output to a lightweight body that’s 20 percent more aerodynamic with an extremely direct steering ratio, and you’re essentially looking at an enthusiast’s package.
The Ferrari 488 GTO (or whatever it will be called) will probably debut at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show in March, so stay tuned for the details.
