The families of Maruti Suzuki workers demanding the release of 147 workers who were arrested in connection with the July 18, 2012 riots were lathi charged by the police on May 19. They had been protesting outside the home of Haryana Industries minister, Randeep Singh Surjewala in Kaithal.
The workers have already been on protest since April 28 and had been staging a dharna (sit down protest) outside the Mini Secretariat in Kaithal. The July 18, 2012 riots took place at the Indo-Japanese automaker’s Manesar plant and resulted in the death of one person and injury to 96 others. The plant had been locked down for over a month and steeply affected sales of the highly popular Swift and Dzire models.
