- Government approves green license plates for electric vehicles
- White fonts for private electric vehicles and yellow fonts for commercial electric vehicles
- Plans to allow individuals aged between 16-18 years to ride electric scooters.
Soon electric cars in India will feature green license plates with numbering in white fonts. The government has recently approved this new move for private as well as commercial vehicles. To distinguish the commercial vehicles from the private ones, they will get green number plates with yellow fonts. This includes the electric busses and other electric commercial vehicles as well. A notification in this regard will be released in a week.
Speaking on the occasion, Union Minster, Nitin Gadkari said, "The government has approved distinctive green license plates for electric vehicles to encourage people to use electric vehicles. Such vehicles will be fitted with green license plates bearing numbers in white fonts for private cars and yellow font for taxis. Exemption from permit will be a game changer as restricted permit regime is a major concern. E-rickshaw growth is attributable to the permit exemption and there is scope to extend the exemption to the e-buses, e-taxis, e-autos and e-bikes. E-auto and e-buses may have a big impact since getting a new permit is extremely difficult."
Additionally, the government is also planning on allowing individuals aged between 16-18 years to ride the electric scooters. The government is also mandating taxi aggregators to run a certain percentage of e-vehicle fleet.
