Mahindra is planning to get aggressive with its electric vehicle plan in India. In fact, the company is now interested in developing an electric SUV and that SUV in question is the Aero, which was unveiled at 2016 Auto Expo in a concept form.
The company hasn’t revealed much information on this project, but it is expected that the Aero electric SUV will be ready in the next four years. A top honcho at Mahindra went on to say that there will be one or maybe two high-end SUV-type electric vehicles. The company doesn’t plan to develop many high-end electric vehicles as the market isn’t large enough. These electric SUVs will be mainly developed for the international markets as there’s high market acceptance there. In India, when the infrastructure and costing is right, Mahindra would definitely launch these models.
Mahindra is currently working on a powerful 380V system that will power its large SUVs and MPVs. There's a high chance that the company would use this powertrain in its upcoming high-end electric vehicles. Currently, Mahindra has two systems – a 48V one and a 72V – powers all its EV line-up. Under its new EV 2.0 initiative, these upcoming systems would see power figures ranging from 41bhp to 204bhp and a range of up to 350kms in a single charge.
