The DeLorean DMC-12 was immortalised in the ‘Back to the Future’ series of science fiction movies that started in the mid-eighties. The Irish built cars are one of the most conserved production cars with about 5,000 units still existing of the 9,000 units ever built. DMC’s new Texan owner has been trying to get the beloved car back in its original form and if you want in, you can register yourself as a potential buyer.
The American ruling last December that allows a rerun of more than 25 years old cars only for small time manufacturers has made it possible. But before you jump in the air with glee, there are a few glitches the return of the DeLorean faces. The company is yet to source a new engine that will fit in the old chassis design and meet the new stringent emission norms. The underpinnings have to be redesigned accordingly and will certainly take some time to fall into place.
But looking at the developments, it seems the comeback of the DeLorean will not be too far but the price tag might turn out to be. Pegged at about $1,00,000 (Rs 65 lakh in India) we do not really think it is a steep price to own an adorable piece of history.
