Datsun, today, has released images of its concept car which will be unveiled globally at the 2014 Auto Expo. There have been rumours that the concept sketch released today might see life as a hatchback. However, we think otherwise.
The image looks like a crossover which will compete with the Ford EcoSport, Mahindra’s crossover based on the Ssangyong X100 concept and Hyundai’s upcoming crossover. Considering Datsun already has the GO which is yet to go on sale and with different vehicles in the portfolio they might look to add some muscle.
The concept looks very radical with a long flowing A-pillar which blends into a pronounced C-pillar with a thick waistline merging straight into the front bumper. The front and rear wheel arches are flared, and the front grille bears a strong resemblance to its siblings-the GO and GO+. The concept gets wrap-around headlights with it extending all the way to the front axle; the tail lamps remind us of the Volvo XC60.
If the concept ends up being a crossover it most probably will be less than four metres long to avail of the excise concessions. The vehicle might share powertains with its cousins and is likely to be powered by the tried and tested 1.5-litre K9K oil burner. They might develop a small capacity turbocharged petrol engine like the EcoSport, but in all probabilities it might use the 1.5-litre petrol motor from the Sunny.
The theory of it being a hatchback is possible but unlikely and we hope it would be a crossover.
