The Datsun Redi-Go concept was the centre of attraction in the Datsun stall at the Auto Expo. The concept car was ogled by spectators and was closely studied by experts and the media fraternity. The concept design does not reveal a crossover nor a small car but it looks like they blended a crossover and a small car.
Datsun officially unveiled a micro crossover at the Auto Expo. We happened to speak to a Datsun representative at their stall, and have more information on the concept. If one says production ready models are a far cry from the original concepts shown, then the surprising information is that this car will look 80 per cent similar to the concept. The concept car didn’t look radical or have design cues from a space shuttle but we expect the car will look stunning if it carries the said amount of design cues from the concept.
We also learnt that the Redi-Go will hit the Indian markets by late 2015. That’s like less than 24 months from the date of its unveiling. The prompt launch date also proves that the company has done its homework well and the car might be extensively tested in the coming months.
The big news is that the car will be cheaper than the GO hatchback, surprised? Yes, it was reported earlier but the same was confirmed by the source and that makes the Redi-Go a sub-four lakh mini crossover. This also reminds us of the statement made by Datsun global head. “If we were to make a car like the Datsun Redi-Go CONCEPT it would be a segment creator in India. It is an aspirational car that at the same time is attainable and a car that would be within the reach of the first time buyer," commented Vincent Cobee, Global Head of Datsun.
The Redi-Go if priced under four-lakhs wearing a mini-crossover like styling might open floodgates for Datsun. The design theme emphasises that affordable cars needn’t be boring to look at and nor should one stick to a specific body design at a particular price point. The Redi-Go could go down in history books as the one of the most important cars launched in India.
