Datsun may have struggled a bit since its resurrection in 2013 but the brand is now looking to make a big splash in developing markets with its range of affordable compact vehicles. This forthcoming range includes a new compact crossover called the Go-Cross. Having made its debut at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, the Go-Cross will soon be showcased at the Auto Expo 2016.
Although still in concept form, the Go-Cross is based on the Go+ compact MPV and hints at an upcoming compact crossover model from Datsun. The GO+ design influence can be seen in the front-end that features typical Datsun styling cues like the large trapezoidal grille and the sleek looking headlights. The concept also gets beefy plastic cladding, roof rails and chunky wheels.
The Go-Cross is still in concept form which means there are no details on the interiors or drivetrain yet; having said that, the production model is likely to be offered with a 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol engine as standard. Additionally, there is a possibility that the Go-Cross may be the first model in the Datsun line-up to be offered with a diesel engine. In that case, it will be the 1.5-litre dCi engine that powers a range of Nissan and Renault models.
Following its appearance at the Auto Expo, the Datsun Go-Cross will be put into production later in the year. Needless to say, the production model will give the budget brand a significant boost in expanding into new markets.
