Daimler has reduced the number of production shifts for the Mercedes Benz S-Class at its facility in Sindelfingen, Germany from two to one until the next model makes its debut in the summer of 2013. Sources attribute this move to a slump in demand being caused by the European financial crisis.
The company has said that workers assigned to build the German automaker’s flagship model will be sent to the C-Class assembly line during that period. It added that during the fourth quarter, roughly 8,000 fewer S-Class cars will be built as a result of the agreement with its employees. Last year Mercedes Benz sold 69,000 S-Classes globally with maximum demand being from China where the long wheelbase version is popular.
