As a part of its new SUV nomenclature, Mahindra’s upcoming compact SUV, codenamed S101, will be officially called the XUV100. Mahindra, in fact, has even registered a new domain name - www.mahindraxuv100.com, specifically for this much-awaited model.
Coming back to Mahindra’s new naming strategy for its SUVs, the move is probably the outcome of the Indian brand’s affinity with alpha-numeric model names after the introduction of the XUV500. The forthcoming TUV300 – also a compact utility vehicle – further amplifies Mahindra’s new naming strategy.
Spied on several occasions in the past, the XUV100 is a sub-4 metre utility vehicle that has been under development longer than we can remember. Given how crucial the compact utility vehicle segment is at present, Mahindra seems to be taking its own time perfecting the XUV100 for compact utility vehicle buyers.
Being a Mahindra, the XUV100 will be fairly spacious for its size; however, what’s interesting is that it will be built on a new monocoque platform that will underpin a variety of future Mahindra models. As for the drivetrain, the vehicle will be offered with a range of 1.2-litre petrol and diesel engine options. There will also be an AMT (automated manual transmission) option to add to the practicality quotient of the XUV100.
The XUV100 is expected to join Mahindra’s current line-up by the end of this year and if we take cues from the bigger XUV500, we would end up calling it the XUV One Double O. Besides this, Mahindra is also working on the TUV300 which will be officially launched on September 10.
