In its attempt to achieve unparalleled performance, Lamborghini has off late been busy developing carbon fibre connecting rods.
Till date the carmaker has been using carbon fibre in panels, chassis, wheels, spoilers and a whole lot of other components. Now, everybody knows the benefits of this element, and its properties simply make it conducive for components like the con rod. This is considering the forces these rods withstand. Not to mention that being lighter and stronger will also help it spin faster, resulting in swifter response.
In its Advanced Composite Laboratory in Seattle, the carmaker uses forged carbon fibre technology to develop these rods. This process requires extreme heat and pressure be rendered to a mixture of carbon fibres and resin. Only finishing is necessitated after the entire three minute forging process is complete. Compare this to the earlier method of baking a carbon mould for 12 hours!
Lamborghini's head of research and development, Maurizio Reggiani, said, "I hope that in one-and-a-half years, we are able to finish development and say that this can be a part which can go into one of our future engines."
