- Believed to be testing BS-VI compliant 1.0-litre engine in Alto 800 body shell
- Likely to be introduced in new-generation Alto
Maruti Suzuki introduced the new BS-VI compliant Alto 800 in India back in April. This time around, an Alto 800 was spotted with an emission testing apparatus attached to its exhaust system. This is believed to be the 1.0-litre engine which is due for a BS-VI upgrade, undergoing test in an Alto 800 bodyshell. The upgraded BS-VI compliant 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine is likely to be introduced before the April 2020 mandate.
The country’s largest car manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki has been working on the next-generation Alto for a while now. It is believed that the new-generation Alto will be showcased at the 2020 Auto Expo and is likely to be powered by the updated 1.0-litre K-Series petrol engine. Moreover, the new model might also get a 1.2-litre variant at the time of launch. Currently, the 1.0-litre petrol engine in the Alto K10 produces 67bhp and 90Nm of peak torque. The BS-VI compliant is expected to produce similar power output figures.
The new-generation Maruti Suzuki Alto is expected to be based on the Heartect platform, which is lighter and more rigid to comply with the new safety norms. More details about the new-generation Alto will be known over time.
