We were excited back in February when David Brabham founded the ‘Brabham Automotive’ just ahead of Geneva. Well, it has been just three months and after the initial teasers, the Brabham BT62 has finally been revealed and it is every bit evocative of the Brabham legacy that began with Jack Brabham nearly six decades ago.
Staying true to its racing roots, the Brabham BT62 is a track-only machine and tips the scales at just 972kg. Powering the rocketship is a 5.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 that pumps out a modest 700bhp by hypercar standards. But the almost 750bhp per tonne power-to-weight ratio is certainly hypercar category and the low weight will mean better corner dynamics than many of its rivals.
The styling is all functional, including that unique front, the underbody air-flow and the rear-diffuser along with the mammoth wing. It generates more downforce than the weight of the car which means, you can ideally drive it upside down. The design is as spartan on the inside as it is on the outside, focusing only on one thing – speed.
The racing steering wheel gets a score of buttons that will help you set the car up as you drive with a digital instrument cluster reading you all the vitals. The racing buckets are probably the only surfaces wrapped in leather along with a few tit-bits strewn across the cabin because everything else is naked carbon-fibre and the roll-cage.
A mere 70 of these cars will be ever built and most of them might have been already sold, if not all! But what the Brabham BT62 offers is pure rear-wheel drive racecar experience for a price tag of about a million pounds (approx. Rs 9 crores) without any duties and taxes added to it.
