BMW is developing a new compact roadster based on the Z4 and it might be named the Z2. The upcoming vehicle has now been rendered by a website and these images give us an idea of what the production version might look like.
The BMW Z2 will be based on the company’s UKL front-wheel-drive (FWD) platform and is expected to borrow traits from the 2 Series Active Tourer. The renderings suggest that the car will have a retractable roof like the Z4 and it is also expected that to save weight as the lightweight car will feature a fabric top.
The BMW Z2 will be powered by a host of four-cylinder engines from BMW's modular engine architecture. The power output will range from 160bhp to 230bhp. A high-performance Z2 M might also be considered and it will produce power in excess of 300bhp. The power will be sent to all four wheels through the xDrive system.
The new Z2 roadster is expected to be placed below the Z4 which was first launched in 2002. It will accompany the other FWD models that will be added in the carmaker's range of cars soon. BMW plans to rope in more buyers for these cars as the platform used for these cars is cheaper to manufacture which will eventually reduce the overall price of the car.
