- Apart from the standard X5 M and X6 M, BMW has also revealed the Competition pack for both the SUVs.
- Powered by the same powertrain found in the M5 and M8 Competition.
Taking the ludicrousness up a notch, BMW has taken the wraps off the third-generation of their M powered SUVs – X5 M and X6 M. Even though they both might be the most impractical things on wheels and destroys the purpose of SUVs, who doesn’t love a superfast SUV which could devour sports car on a race track. And since people keep buying them, BMW has obliged with an even powerful version of the both these SUVs with a Competition guise.
Power comes from the 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 which punches out 600bhp and 750Nm in the ‘standard’ version. In the Competition version, the power is bumped by 25 horsepower while the twisting force remains unchanged. This is enough firepower to propel the monstrous SUVs from standstill to a 100kmph in just 3.8 seconds (3.7 seconds in Competition) while the top speed is electronically limited to 250kmph. But put down some extra cash and the M Driver's package could see the speedo go up to 285kmph.
All the power is sent to BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system with a rear-biased set-up channelled through the trusty eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic. Also part of the hardware are - active differential, adaptive suspension with electronically controlled dampers, active roll stabilization, compound brakes and increased stiffness of the body structure and suspension mountings.
In terms of design – in a typical BMW fashion – there are massive air intakes up front, blacked-out kidney grille with double bars, M gills on the front side panels, a roof-mounted spoiler, and large diffusers at the back with quad-exhaust tips. All four models sit lower on massive 21 inch M light-alloy wheels at the front and 22-inch wheels at the rear. BMW Individual paint can be had as well to make your M performance SUV standout.
On the inside, the M-spec cockpit has special buttons for the engine, dampers, steering, M xDrive and braking system. The two individual M buttons on the steering wheel reminds that these aren’t just any run-of-the-mill SUVs. There are two driving modes – Road and Sport, while the Competition variant gets an additional Track mode. BMW claims that these SUVs are bred on racetracks such as Miramas and Arjeplog testing facilities and the Nürburgring-Nordschleife amongst others.
After making a public debut at the 2019 Los Angeles Motor Show later this year, production and market launch for BMW X5 M and X6 M along with the Competition guises are set for April 2020.
