The upcoming generation of the BMW X3 (codenamed G01) has been caught on test again, this time in the feisty M guise. Based on the new CLAR architecture, both the regular X3 and the hot X3 M will be launched by 2017 and early 2018 respectively.
In typical BMW fashion, the next-gen X3 will be a rear-wheel drive model at its core even though such a tail happy offering will not be offered. The good part though is that the xDrive all-wheel drive system will continue to send most of its power to the rear wheels. New on-board tech from the latest 7-Series should see the X3 topping its segment in this regard, with a lot of new features sourced from more expensive BMW models.
Coming back to the X3 M, the model of course will carry a lot more aggressive stance compared to the regular X3 range, thanks to wider wheel arches and a more striking bodywork. Under the skin, BMW is likely to stuff a lot from the 425bhp M3/M4 parts bin.
There is still a long way for the X3 M to hit the showrooms. When launched, this high performance model will be sold alongside the bigger X5 M and the X6 M.
