Our spy sleuths have been keeping a keen eye on the upcoming BMW X2, having spotted it testing on multiple occasions. The production spec crossover was teased for the first time under camouflage while negotiating the traffic-choked lanes of a big city.
Interestingly, the X2 preview images were released by a lifestyle blog rather than BMW, while the Bavarian carmaker is warming up for the global premiere of the new crossover. As the name suggests, the X2 will be positioned between the current X1 and X3 in BMW’s growing crossover range. The X2 was showcased as the X2 Concept at Paris Motor Show. Judging by the way BMW’s new nomenclature works, the X2 will be a sportier derivative of the X1 in the same way as the X4 is to the X3. It will be a coupe-crossover similar to the X4.
The design language of the X2 remains true to the patent images leaked last month and is much toned down, compared to the flamboyant X2 Concept. It will be based on the new UKL platform as the new generation X1. The headlights and other exterior details seem similar to the other SUVs in the BMW family. The C-Pillar is carrying a raked design to lend the crossover-coupe stance. Dual circular exhaust tips, sunroof and a pair of circular fog lamps above the grille are a few highlights of the teased vehicle.
The all-new BMW X2 is slated to debut at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show in September before hitting showrooms worldwide in the first half of 2018. BMW might bring the new X2 to India as well once it goes on sale in international markets. The X2 will go up against the likes of Range Rover Evoque, Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe and the Audi Q2.
