BMW is currently working on an updated version of its compact crossover, the X1. On sale since globally 2009, the X1 represents the smallest and the most affordable form of BMW’s X range of SUVs. The brand is now looking to launch a comprehensively updated model, spy shots of which have recently hit the web.
Spy pictures of the front-end reveal a more prominent and larger kidney grille and influence of BMW’s current design language seen in the latest-generation X4, X5 and the X6. The bumper, too, has been thoroughly restyled to achieve the latest-gen look seen in the aforementioned models.
Inside, a lot of design touches and materials will be carried over from the current model though BMW will add a few new features and update the iDrive infotainment system. The biggest upgrades will be the underpinnings. This new model will move from the RWD platform to the UKL1 FWD platform that currently underpins the new generation of Mini hatchbacks. Since this is an ‘X’ designated vehicle, xDrive will be offered on specific variants but a majority of the offerings will be front-wheel drive.
The new X1 is expected to be unveiled at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show, followed by an official launch in select European markets. BMW India, meanwhile, could bring the X1 to India by the end of next year.
