BMW North America will recall 45,000 models of the 7-Series manufactured between 2005 and 2008 to fix a software glitch that could make a parked car roll-away after the driver has exited the vehicle. The German automaker has said that the recall is for all cars equipped with the Comfort Access option.
BMW say the cars are designed to automatically shift into Park mode once the driver presses the start/stop button to shut off the engine. The glitch is that if the driver presses the start/stop button two to three times within a short period, the transmission may shift to neutral rather than Park. In such a scenario when the driver exits the vehicle and if the parking brake is not applied, then there is a chance the car will roll away.
BMW has said that it will start notifying owners of the problem next month and added that dealers would only be able to rectify the problem by March. This is the second recall for the German automaker’s flagship model in the USA. Last week, BMW announced that it would recall 7, 485 7-Series manufactured between 2005 and 2007 for faulty door latches.
BMW India has said that the recall is only for US market models only and confirmed that the 7-series models sold in India during that period will not be affected.
