BMW has confirmed to Economic Times that it will bring the new Mini to the Indian market soon. The German automaker unveiled its latest iteration of its iconic small car on November 18 at a function in London.
This new car is based on BMW’s new UKL1 front-wheel-drive platform and is expected to share its underpinnings with the next generation X1 and 1 Series. The company said that it managed to sell 300 units of the car in the Indian market in 2012 and was expecting to see higher numbers this year. It began the local assembly of the hatchback at its Chennai plant in April and consequently began a roll out of the three new Countryman variants on May 22.
We have already spoken in detail about the new F56 Mini and how it is the first major redesign for the hatchback. The car was launched in the Cooper and Cooper S variants and we expect that Mini will roll out the other models in the range with the new design philosophy over the course of 2014.
It is likely that BMW will first bring the new Mini as a CBU to the Indian market and it is almost certain that the new car will be on display at the 2014 Auto Expo. It is also possible that BMW, when preparing its plant for the assembly of the Mini, decides to tool it up directly for the new car so as to start local assembly of more models on a faster basis.
