BMW, as we know, is expanding its SUV and crossover line-up to meet the demand of increasing number of younger buyers. The brand currently has a range of practical and family-oriented crossovers but now, it seems a sporty alternative to the X1 and the X3 is in order in the form of the X2. To be launched as a niche offering globally, the X2 could give BMW a potential advantage over its key rivals here in India given the lack of options for those looking for a stylish and sporty crossover with a posh badge.
Shown first at the Paris Motor Show earlier this year, the X2 resembles a high-riding hatchback as it features a rakish windscreen, a compact greenhouse and a gradually sloping roof. As seen in these spy pictures, the X2 also has a sporty front fascia with a wide grille that is flanked by sweptback headlights. Other notable features include an angular beltline, dual exhausts and a small rear tail gate with an integrated spoiler.
Engine and drivetrain details remain unconfirmed but the X2 is bound to be based on BMW’s new front-wheel drive UKL platform that underpins the new X1 and the Mini range. Engine options will carryover from the X1 so expect to see an assortment of familiar petrol and diesel units including a 2-litre TwinPower Turbo four-cylinder motor that develops 228bhp. There will also be less powerful 148bhp and 187bhp diesel models that will be top picks of the X2 range in many markets.
BMW has already showcased the X2 in concept form and is now working on the production-spec model, as seen in these spy pictures. The new X2 is expected to be shown early next year as BMW’s third Sports Activity Coupe, following the X6 and the X4.
