BMW has seen a sales boost of 11 per cent in December and with that, they have clinched the title of ‘the top-selling luxury automaker’ from Mercedes-Benz, in the United States. The volumes were generated largely due to the 3 and 4 Series and the X5 SUV.
The German carmaker sold about 3,39,738 units in 2014 and in comparison Mercedes sold 3,30,391 units making it a clear winner by a fair margin. Lexus finished third behind Mercedes with sales of 3,11,389 units with Audi at the fourth position with sales of 1,82,011 units.
The sales has also been boosted because of low interest rates, attractive leasing offers and a resurgent stock market Despite the affordable and popular CLA-Class being launched in the US market, Mercedes couldn’t defend its title. However, it is also cited that limited stock of the CLA-Class did affect their chances. The fight this year will get intense and Mercedes-Benz will look forward to reclaim its title.
In India, BMW has gone down to the third position with Mercedes-Benz in the second position and Audi leading the luxury game. The Bavarian carmaker doesn’t have an answer to the Mercedes CLA-Class or the Audi A3 yet and they need to get the 1 Series sedan soon. However, that seems a little difficult until 2016 when the car will be launched in the international markets.
