- Powered by 4.4-litre V8 with a 25bhp boost in power output
- Second Competition model in India after the M2
BMW launched the newest generation of their super saloon, the M5, in India at last years’ 2018 Delhi Auto Expo. Now, the Bavarian carmaker has brought in its uprated version in India priced at Rs 1.54 crore (ex-showroom). Called the M5 Competition, the super saloon gets a significantly worked up suspensions, and a bump in power output.
Under the hood is the same 4.4-litre twin-turbocharged V8 but now it produces 616bhp at 6,000rpm – 25bhp more than the standard M5. The torque remains unchanged at 750Nm accessible between 1,800 and 5,800rpm. The M5 Competition can sprint to a 100kmph from standstill in a mere 3.3 seconds and to 200kmph in 10.8 seconds (both 0.3 seconds quicker than the standard car).
Making the M5 Competition’s performance even more focused are specially developed engine mounts with an increased spring rate. Meanwhile, the suspension set-up is stiffened by 10 per cent and the chamber on the front axle is increased to absorb more lateral forces through higher cornering speeds. The toe-link is fitted with ball joints instead of rubber mounts at the rear axle. And the rear anti-roll bar also has a firmer spring rate. All these changes can be felt across the three driving modes as well.
The M5 already sits lower than the standard 5 Series and the M5 Competition rides seven millimetres further closer to the ground. Other changes in terms of appearance include an M Sport exhaust system with black chrome tailpipes. BMW has also added a particulate filter to the Competition to aid in the reduction of emissions. The M5 Competition sits on Y-spoke twin-colour wheels wrapped in 275/35 at the front and 285/35 at the rear. The car is finished in high-gloss Shadow Line trim with black kidney grilles, M gills on the fenders, rear spoiler and “Competition” badging all around.
The M5 Competition locks horns with the Mercedes-AMG E63 S. It is the second Competition model in India after the M2 Competition and we can hope many more to come our way in coming years.
