The BMW M4 GT4 made a surprised appearance at the BMW Motorsport's end of year Season Review event in Munich in December last year. The car, although still in the development stage took to the track for the 24-hour race season starters in Abu Dhabi. Now BMW Motorsport has dropped a teaser of the hardcore M4 ahead of this week’s reveal.
The M4 racing car would enter the fray for the 2018 season. It would be conforming to the GT4 regulations, which means it will be down on power compared to the mad GTS version. However, technology from the GTS is expected to filter through in the race car. The GT4 will retain the road-going M4’s twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six engine with all the confined GT4 class regulations.
The most prominent aero package here will be the large wing at the back. Front splitters have been added, just like in the GTS. But it now gets a canard on the side with a more aerodynamic front bumper as can be seen in the teaser image. On the other end, the rear diffuser is expected to be more aggressive in order to generate a racing level of downforce. The bonnet and doors would be made of carbon-fibre while it will gain an FIA-standard roll cage, on the inside. The exhaust and suspension would also be race prepped.
The BMW M4 GT4 is more closely aligned with the road car compared to the GT3 and DTM compliant race cars. It won’t be a surprise if BMW develops a road-going version of the M4 GT4 in the coming years. In the BMW Motorsport family, the M4 GT4 is positioned between the M235i Racing and the M6 GT3. Expect to see the GT4 burn some rubber at events such as 24-Hours Endurance Nurburgring, against the likes of Aston Martin Vantage GT4 and Porsche Cayman GT4.
