In 1988, when BMW chopped the roof off the first M3, much to everyone’s surprise, they created the M3 Convertible. And now, 30 years later, BMW is celebrating that landmark move by bringing out a celebratory M4 Convertible Edition 30 Jahre with a limited production run of just 300 units.
This is a BMW tradition. Every time a model completes a three or four decade-long successful runs, BMW brings out a special anniversary edition of that model, usually called the Jahre (German for ‘year’) edition. So far, they have brought out a 7 Series Edition 40 Jahre, 2016’s M3 30 Jahre, and 2014’s 30 Jahre M5. The 2018 M4 Convertible is the newest one to join the league. The limited edition M4 Convertible is based on the M Competition Package trim which comes with adaptive suspension, exhaust system, and an active differential as standard. Power for the twin-turbo 3.0-litre straight-six is also 444bhp, same as in the Competition Package.
The visual additions to the Jahre edition include two bespoke paints as a part of a tribute to its predecessors. The Macao blue paint scheme is a reference to the original model while the Mandarin II Uni is a nod to the famous Dakar Yellow paint job of the second generation E36 M3 Convertible. Other standard features of the special edition include blacked-out kidney grille, M lettered side gills and 20-ich M-spec alloys done in Orbit Grey matte with a matte finish. The inside is done in Merino leather matching the individual exterior colour. Besides that, this package includes contrast stitching on the headrests as well as M floor mats with piping in the respective contrasting colour. Moreover, the doorsills and the headrests, both, are embossed with ‘30 Jahre Edition’ . Similarly, a signet strip in front of the passenger dashboard is imprinted with the same ‘30 Jahre Edition’ and the number ‘1/300’, an allusion to the limited production run of this special edition.
However, BMW hasn’t yet revealed the prices of the M4 Convertible Edition 30 Jahre. But expect a hefty premium over the standard convertible for this limited run M4.
