BMW M2 Competition: Explained in Detail

BMW has launched their newest firecracker right after Diwali – the BMW M2 Competition. It is the smallest of the Ms but certainly not in terms of the power figures. Powered by the same 3.0-litre straight-six that powers the M4, the M2 is smaller and hence lighter and hence even more fun.

For those who are yet to know, the M2 is based on the 2 Series, which is a two-door coupe-sedan smaller than the 3 Series. Pumping 404bhp of power and 550Nm torque to the rear wheel through a seven-speed M DCT gearbox, it will holler to 100kmph in 4.2 seconds. 19-inch alloys, M-Sport brake callipers, exhaust with activated flaps in them to control the back pressure, the M2 Competition is loaded to the brim with performance touches.

And like all M-cars, it is luxurious as well. So no compromise on the climate control the power seats or the touchscreen infotainment. The cabin is still laden with choicest of the leathers and finished with top-notch craftsmanship. For Rs 79.9 lakhs ex-showroom, the BMW M2 seems to be a lot of car and a lot of performance for that kind of money. Its only competition is the erstwhile CLA 45 AMG but if you look at it, there is also the Ford Mustang with its 5.0-litre V8. But then, the driving dynamics of the BMW is in a league much beyond the pony car.

And if you think of it, Audi has the S5 priced in a similar bracket and it produces over 300bhp from its 3.0-litre V6. And it can seat four, or five for that matter, and have enough space for their luggage as well.

Speaking about performance cars, a little stretch will get you another German, the Porsche 718 Cayman, a fancier badge and the famed Porsche engineering.  Stretch a little more and true British sport-touring comes in the form of the Jaguar F-Type at just over Rs 90 lakhs ex-showroom. Mercedes-Benz’s SLC43 AMG isn’t too far off in terms of horsepower and has a convertible top as well.

Moving to rather conventional options, Mercedes-Benz E350d, BMW 530d fit in perfectly. A little more practicality is lent by the E-Class All-terrain and the Volvo V90. But then, they can never be compared to the cracker of a car the M2 Competition is.
