- The iNEXT is the upcoming electric SUV from BMW which will arrive in 2021.
- The Curved Display is the first of the many teasers from BMW for the iNEXT.
BMW has dropped the first of the many teasers for the upcoming iNEXT electric SUV. The teaser showcases not the exterior of the iNEXT, but its rather unusual infotainment screen. Unusual because unlike the conventional ‘flat’ screen which sits atop the centre console, the iNEXT will feature what BMW simply calls a ‘Curved Display’.
Also, instead of having a separate panel for infotainment screen and instrument cluster, this curved panel combines them both into one giant screen. BMW claims that this integrated unit focused on the driver optimises the visualisation of information and facilitates intuitive touch control.
Interestingly, the Curved Display is positioned in such a way that the occupants cannot see its connection to the instrument panel. The design of the Curved Display takes its inspiration from modern consumer electronics technology and is held in place by an extremely slim magnesium bracket. Even the glass is made of non-reflective material so as to eliminate any need of shade inside the cabin. At the same time, the Control Display area is supposed to be clearly visible and accessible to the front passenger as well.
The iNEXT is still a couple of years away. It is slated to hit the streets only in 2021 and will face competition from all the other electric SUVs such as Audi e-tron, Jaguar I-Pace, Tesla Model X, Mercedes-Benz EQC and many more.
